Original Title: Reborn
Subject: In 1952, HRH Princess Norodom Kantha Bopha, nicknamed “A-Mech”, the preferred daughter of King Norodom Sihanouk, died victim of a brutal leukaemia, aged only 4 years old. Upon his return to Cambodia from exile in China in the years 1990s, a charming young lady of the Cambodian upper class, visited Norodom Sihanouk and claimed that she was the reborn Princess Kantha Bopha. Based on these real events, Norodom Sihanouk wrote the scenario of this film which was made in North Korea in March 2006.

Editorial note: This film of Norodom Sihanouk was inspired by three events that took place during the “Khmer Republic” of Lon Nol (1970-1975). The first one concerned a conversation by Lon Nol with the former US Vice-President Spiro Agnew, during which Lon Nol told his visitor that there was a “dragon living under the basement of Watt Phnom (the famous sanctuary located in a hill in the centre of Phnom Penh). The second event was the so-called existence of a “sacred spade” that would prevent the Khmers Rouges from taking over the Cambodian capital and also the re-sale by Lon Nol’s army of medicines, arms and military equipment to the Khmers Rouges. The last event was the activities of Lon Nol’s brother, Colonel Lon Non, who managed to ruin a number of Sino-Khmer jewellers by making demands of precious jewels and money from them. Some were forced to migrate to Hong Kong.

Subject: This film of Norodom Sihanouk was inspired by a Khmer song that became a hit in Cambodia and among Cambodians abroad. It tells the story of a Buddhist monk that left his monastery to marry a beautiful woman, only to find out that she was unfaithful with a wealthy businessman. The monk, full of guilt, returns to the monastery and promises Buddha to never abandon his life as monk again. The film was made at the Royal Residence in Beijing, China.
